Accessibility
Made in LA is committed to making our products and services accessible to everyone, no matter their abilities. Our website is designed with the latest web accessibility standards in mind, and include features to make our content as accessible as possible.
How Made in LA supports accessibility
We know that creating an accessible experience is a team effort, and removing barriers is everyone’s responsibility. To ensure our approach to accessibility is ongoing and iterative, our teams:
- Consider accessibility at the start of every project and continue to address accessibility throughout.
- Conduct regular audits and tests according to the latest web accessibility standards.
- Employ formal accessibility quality assurance (QA) methods.
Conformance Status
The World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements to improve digital access for everyone. We aim to meet the guidelines laid out in WCAG 2.2 AA and comply with the laws, regulations, and standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to provide equal and fair access for individuals with disabilities.
Accessibility features
- Color contrast and size: We’ve considered the visual contrast ratios, size, and scalability of text and interactive elements throughout.
- Keyboard usage: Users can navigate the site using either the keyboard or assistive technologies (i.e. no mouse). Focus states are highly visible, and focus order advances in a predictable manner. A “skip to main content” link is included on all pages so that users navigating by keyboard may quickly bypass repeated content blocks like the global navigation menu.
- Text alternatives and time-based media: Information portrayed with rich media such as images, videos, and audio include text alternatives such as alt tags, captioning, and/or audio descriptions.
- Enhanced user controls: Motion content (e.g., videos, information that moves, blinks, or scrolls) can be controlled through pause, stop, or hide mechanisms to reduce distractions.
- Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA): ARIA is a set of roles and attributes used throughout madein.la that define ways to make web content more accessible to assistive technology users. ARIA supplements HTML so that interactions can be passed to assistive technologies when there is no other mechanism.
- Responsive design: We’ve designed page layouts to reflow depending on the device size or settings, including device orientation and browser zoom.
- Usability best practices: Interactive elements use standard web conventions and predictable patterns that are intuitive and easy to use. Pages are logically structured using semantic markup.
Assessment approach
We assessed the accessibility of madein.la using the following approaches:
- Automated testing: All components and select pages have been tested for accessibility conformance using Axe DevTools and Google Lighthouse.
- Manual testing: Critical user flows and components were manually tested for keyboard navigation, and screen reader usability using VoiceOver on Mac.
